Thank you for supporting our families

The past year has forced all of us to be more conscious of our health. We understand homelessness is a public health issue and by helping families remain in their homes, out of shelters, we are working to keep them as safe and healthy as possible. Our role in the health and well-being of our families has become more apparent as the pandemic continues because the working poor cannot afford to be sick. We are thankful to report that no families in our program faced eviction during the pandemic.

One of our hardworking moms, "Anita," was hospitalized with an infection following the birth of her second baby. Single moms like Anita, in low-paying or essential jobs, do not receive the amount of paid sick leave, much less paid maternity leave, to weather emergencies such as this. Our rental assistance helped keep her family in their home, so she can focus on getting better instead of worrying about an eviction. In addition to financial support, North Star recently provided grocery gift cards and cleaning supplies.

Essential workers can't work from home, making the possibility of a positive COVID case more likely. "Natalie" was in this position this spring. In addition to worrying about how her asthma may affect her recovery, she worried how she would remain current in her rent while missing two weeks of work. Without a safety net, families like Natalie's could be in serious jeopardy, through no fault of their own. Natalie continues to receive our rental assistance to avoid issues with her rent.

We were thrilled to learn that one of our program participants, "Lauren," has been accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program and is on her way to being a first-time homebuyer. After successfully completing the Housing Partnership of Chester County Program, improving her credit score, and enrolling in Open Hearth's Savings Program, Lauren reached her goals. She begins her "sweat equity" this summer with plans to move into her new home this fall.
